Why does solar suit airports and ports?
Airfields and car parks give airports land that cannot be built on but can carry panels.
- Dublin Airport (daa): On 28 acres near the south runway; daa says more than 15,000 panels; phase 2 of about 6,000 more by late 2027, subject to planning.
- Belfast International Airport: Snippet-only: ground array at Crookedstone Road with a direct private-wire link to the airport.
- Cork Airport, Holiday Blue car park: Snippet-only: solar carport with five inverters; a 2024 document gives other panel counts and one headline misprints the size as 17 MW.
- Shannon Airport: Snippet-only: over 2,700 bifacial panels on 5.5 acres inside the airfield, opened 28 November 2025; installer not named.
- Dublin Port Company: Started with 28 kW on a maintenance building in January 2017, later expanded with 178 kW and a 96 kWh battery.
